Safety information

Ziplining is a super fun and exhilarating adventure activity that’s suitable for almost anyone! However, it’s always important to be aware of the risks involved. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! By identifying these risks, we can address any potential hazards and make sure your ziplining experience is not only fun but also safe. So get ready for an amazing time filled with thrills and adventure!

What are the risks involved in ziplining?

Just like our native manu (birds), ziplining is all about soaring high up off the ground and flying through the air at thrilling speeds. But with great fun, comes great responsibility, right? So it’s important to be aware of the risks involved. These risks include falling from a height, the possibility of colliding with someone or something while zipping, and injuring your hand by touching the line while traveling at speed. The good news is that all of these risks can easily be avoided by following current and safe practices. Get ready to embrace the excitement and enjoy a safe and unforgettable zip lining experience!

Is Ziplining safe?

Depends who you choose to zipline with! When it comes to zip line accidents, the most common causes can be traced back to these three things: equipment failure, operator error, and participant error. At Rotorua Ziplines, we take great pride in our world-leading safety equipment, comprehensive guide training, and meticulous inspection routines. Our operational procedures and practices not only comply with but also exceed the standards set out by the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2016 and the High Wire and Swing Activity Safety Guideline.

Through rigorous daily, weekly, monthly and annual inspections, we ensure that equipment failure is effectively prevented at Rotorua Ziplines. Our continuous and comprehensive guide training programs guarantee your peace of mind, knowing that you are in the most capable hands during your exhilarating adventure. Our staff are qualified and trained to deal with any potential situation that may arise.

So that brings it down to one more thing: participant error. Yeah, that's you! Believe it or not, most injuries occur when folks don’t listen to instructions. But hey, no need to worry! These instructions are super easy, and if you follow them correctly, you can be confident that your experience with Rotorua Ziplines will be nothing but awesome! Here’s an example of one of our most important safety rules at Rotorua Ziplines: Do not touch the cable while on the zipline. Pretty obvious why hey? Unless you want a permanent shaka (surfers wave), the last thing we want is to touch the cable and risk losing our fingers! Thankfully it’s pretty easy to avoid by holding onto the handlebars attached to your harness!

How do you ensure to stay safe while on a zipline tour?

Your safety is our number one priority, and we’re committed to giving you the most amazing zip lining experience ever while keeping you safe and sound. We’ve taken all the necessary steps to prevent any equipment malfunctions or operator errors. But now, it’s up to you to do your part too! Make sure to wear appropriate footwear (no slipping off shoes!), let us know about any health conditions (on our pre-departure risk disclosure form), listen to your awesome guides’ instructions, and stick to our weight limit (127 kg or less)! Let’s have a blast while staying safe!

Rotorua Ziplines operated under the Adventure Activities Regulations 2016 and is subject to annual external audits, annual external course/equipment inspections and operates within industry leading policies. However with any adventure activity there is a degree of inherent risk which we strive to mitigate in every way possible.

By accepting this risk disclosure, you at this moment acknowledge that in participating on a trip run by Rotorua Ziplines, there are inherent dangers and risks and that while Rotorua Ziplines will use a high degree of skill in ensuring the safety and welfare of participants, it will not accept liability for loss, injury or damage sustained by a participant or their dependents in circumstances where the exercise of reasonable care could not have avoided such an event. If I am responsible for a person under the age of 18, I must ensure that the underage person follows the Guides' instructions at all times. I release and indemnify Rotorua Ziplines and staff against any liability they incur to anyone else, resulting from my failure to follow Rotorua Ziplines instructions or the loss of any underage person accompanying me Guides' instructions.

Rotorua Ziplines reserves the right to withdraw any person who, in their opinion, is likely to endanger themselves or others. This exclusion includes the overuse of alcohol and recreational drugs.

I also recognise that Rotorua Ziplines reserves the right to cancel, modify, or curtail any trip if my safety or that of any other person becomes a concern.

Risk Disclosure - Zipline Activities Expose participants to the risk of injury from falling from a height, stopping quickly, hitting an obstruction or suspension trauma.

I am aware that Ziplining is an Adventure Activity with a degree of risk, and participation in a “Rotorua Ziplines Tour" may have dangers and risks, some of which include:

Slip Risk - Walking on uneven surfaces and boardwalks could result in either a trip or slip, which could result in injury or death.

Fall Risk - If equipment is tampered with, equipment failure or fall from height is a risk.

Earthquake - Rotorua is volcanically active, and an earthquake can strike without warning. Given the location of the tour, the seismic activity could result in landslides resulting in severe injury or death.

Weather - Weather conditions may be extreme and change rapidly without warning, resulting in the unlikely risk of trees falling.

I willingly accept all the risks of ziplining, including without limitation the risks described above and the possibility of personal injury, death, property damage, or loss resulting therefrom for any reason. I acknowledge that the enjoyment and excitement of the zipline are derived in part from thrill and adventure. That the inherent risks of zipline contribute to such enjoyment and excitement.

I accept that all Rotorua Zipline liability for loss of or damage to my property, disruption to travel plans, or mental injury is excluded. This exclusion is subject to any rights or remedies a customer has under the Consumer Guarantees Act 2015 or other New Zealand laws.
